All things of this article are based on my personal experience in personal computers securing in my work and home. If you see some language mistakes or errors please send me info - I'm still learning English :) Basics of home PC security are very simple and easy to achive - just achive a few basics principles apply... First - always remember to set password for all users on your system - never leave them empty!! In case of internet worm or trojan horse attack - "bad guys" trying first to login to standard logins (eq. Administrator, guest) without a password or with password the same as user name! IF you have problems with remember many different passwords, you can use password keeper like KeePass Password Safe free download and free use (open source) Second - you must use always up-to-date antivirus program. On the internet we can found and download few free antivirus programs, for example: Free AVG – in my mind, the best program free for home users with e-mail scaner, online shield and search security assistant - free download . Clam Anti Virus – one of the best choices for Linux and UNIX systems, but with Windows version too - without resident shield yet. ClamWin – free antivirus program based on source code of Clam Anti Virus with user‑friendly interface - free download
avast! 4 Home – second commercial product but it's free for home users – free download Third – Microsoft operating systems like Windows XP, Vista and oldest – you must always remember about updating your system and MS Internet Explorer. Good idea is using a different free web browser like Mozilla Firefox, Opera and Google Chrome. If you don’t using MS File and Printer sharing switch it off because it’s very insecure and vulnerable to worm attacks – you can do that in Control Panel > Network Connection > Local Area Connection > Properties uninstall File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks Fourth - Secure aplication installation - if you downloading some files from Internet and you are not sure about that file is secure or that place from where you download this file is not secure, you have to scan it with antivirus program or by free online scaner for example: Kaspersky Lab file scaner or multi-scaner like: VirusTotal or Jotti To be continued...
